Yarn Store of the Month is proving to be having a popular revival, and to continue indulging in these amazing yarn stores, we spoke to Veronica Oliveros who runs Picknit in A Coruña, Spain. We discussed the inspiration behind the business, as well as the future of knitting in Spain.
What was the inspiration to opening Picknit?
I really wanted to offer good customer service and sell brands that other shops do not offer. Nowadays, many shops offer those brands in Spain but we were the first. We have international delivery too, so everyone could have really lovely skeins from our yarn shop.
How popular is knitting/crochet in Spain?
While both crafts are not as popular as they are in Northern European countries, the popularity are most certainly growing at a steady pace.
Since opening, how far has the business developed?
We have continuously grown our yarn offerings and today we sell the full range of shades and colours for some of the brands we stock including Qing Fibre, Litlg, Malabrigo and Madelinetosh Merino Light. These range of yarns are much loved by our customers. We are continuously working to improve our range by adding new brands.
What is the secret to your success?
We prefer to sell high quality brands and our main objective is to ensure our clients are happy with their purchases. We listen to our customers’ needs and adapt with the times. Besides, we use the yarns ourselves!
How has HiyaHiya helped your business to flourish?
HiyaHiya produce exquisite needles and accessories that my clients are crazy for.
What do you love most about your line of work?
I have loved colours since I was a child, which led me to start knitting beautiful garments made from a variety of different dyes. I adore this job because I am working everyday surrounded by colourful skeins.
What trends do you see happening in the craft industry in the future?
I think new textures will appear in yarns as patterns adapt and change with the times, and more magazines specialised in trendy patterns which are very important nowadays.
What are your plans for Picknit in the future?
We would like to add new brands, improve our customer service and, if it is possible, offer better prices.
